's a pro-gun guy. we have senator harry reid, pro gun guy who is the majority leader of the senate and john boehner, the house is squarely going to deliver all of this right at harry reid's feet. what do senate democrats who are pro-gun do? and is that the easiest achilles heel for those on the right to target them? >> well, that's exactly right, thomas. i think the biggest problem for the president and his gun agenda will be harry reid and all the senate democrats up for reelection next time around. i think what john boehner and the house republicans are going to say is we'll take this up as soon as the senate passes it. and i would guarantee you that it's going to be very difficult to get this through the senate. senator reid has not come out four square behind the president's proposals. my guess is he won the -- his last election chiefly because he got the nra's endorsement. he's not going to necessarily want to turn his back. because if he does turn his back on the nra. and not just about the nra. i would say the nra has done a very good job of delegitimatizing itself with these ads. bu

harry reid stopped short of embracing president obama's proposal calling them thoughtful recommendations. is the president's tone contributing to a lack of bipartisanship? >> no. i don't think this is about his tone. i think it is interesting to have a republican senator calling president obama combative given the nature of in congress and how the senate has blocked and pushed them into a corner. i think there is some room for the president to reach out to members of congress more, build those relationships more. have one-on-one meetings with them, do golfing with them, but we have to keep in mind that when we came into office, his leadership style was consensus. that is at the heart of this man. what is unfortunately happened, republicans have said, we're not going to come to the take and participate. we're going block and be the party of no. so you have to go to executive actions or executive orders. that is not how government should work. hopefully they will... ford, you know that the republicans have blocked everything. he has at the point where he has to take executive actions. >> a

majority leader harry harry reid said one of his biggest regrets is not reforming the filibuster. the president announced he was considering major changes to the rulings. reed wanted to change the rules by requiring filibuster senators to occupy the floor and speak if he want to delay legislation. now, however, as we approach the deadline for making the decision, it seems like senator reed maybe backing away. the senate is currently in recess until tuesday and when they return they'll have to make a decision, whether to make good on genuine reform of the filibuster. a watered-down compromise that many say doesn't go far enough. this is one of those reformers. senator john udall. and the executive director of the democratic national committee. thank you both for being here. >> thank you, great to be here with you, chris. you started covering this very early. >> senator, you just sat down and i said this morning before this interview i looked at the notes that i transcribed from the interview i did in your office on 2011 on precisely this issue which was the last time it was with y

just mentioned, martha, it has been almost four years since harry reid and the democrats have passed a budget. i think there is a larger point here. everybody in washington, especially the democrats, are celebrating the republicans blinked here and there is no question they blinked in the showdown with the president and are giving him another three-month debt extension. you know the real problem and i just want to make this point, the problem isn't whether we are going to have a debt limit showdown, the problem is that we are borrowing $16.4 trillion. all we are doing here, martha to be realistic about it is we are saying, coach doing what you're doing, we are going to keep borrowing at the same pace. this is not a solution. martha: matt, i look at this i feel like every time there is a so-called deadline we all know that the deadlines are so squishy and congress always figures out some way not to have to feel with the deadline and live in the real world and get the work done. i think people are sick to death of this. >> we've almost become numb to it i think. last year when this was
